(v) Description of Requirement:
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), operates the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) located at the MedStar Harbor Hospital campus in Baltimore, Maryland. The CRU serves as the primary dedicated clinical facility supporting human longitudinal and translational aging research protocols, including the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), the Genetic and Epigenetic Signatures of Translational Aging Laboratory Testing (GESTALT) study, and specialized clinical trials investigating age-related functional decline and metabolic disorders.
A cornerstone of these intramural clinical protocols involves invasive outpatient biopsy procedures—specifically percutaneous skeletal muscle biopsies, subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies, and dermal skin punch biopsies. These procedures provide vital biospecimens for cellular, molecular, and physiological characterization of human aging.
