What is a NAICS code?

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard the US, Canada and Mexico use to classify businesses by what they do. A full code has six digits: the first two give the sector (56 is administrative and support services), and each further digit narrows it down, to 561720 for janitorial services. The codes are revised every five years; the federal government uses the current edition.

How to find your NAICS code

  1. Type what your business does in the search above, in plain words, and read the matching titles.
  2. Pick the code that describes most of your revenue as your primary code, and add any others you also do.
  3. Open the code to see the federal contracts open under it today, and who is buying.

Why NAICS codes matter for federal contracts

Every federal contract opportunity names one NAICS code. It decides which small business size standard applies: whether your firm counts as small for that contract, and so whether you can bid on its small business set-aside. When you register in SAM.gov you list the NAICS codes you work in, and agencies search those to find suppliers. Listing the right codes, and watching the notices posted under them, is the core of finding work. Our guide to getting government contracts walks through the rest.

Questions

What is a NAICS code?

A six-digit code from the North American Industry Classification System that describes what a business does. The first two digits are the sector; each further digit narrows the industry.

How do I find my NAICS code?

Search by keyword in a NAICS lookup such as the one on this page, and choose the code that covers most of your revenue as your primary code. You can list several codes in SAM.gov.

Can a business have more than one NAICS code?

Yes. You choose one primary code and can list as many others as you work in. Each federal notice names one code, and its size standard decides whether you count as small for that contract.

How many NAICS codes are there?
