SECTION 1 – BACKGROUND

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) leads the nation’s efforts to prevent chronic diseases and promote health across the lifespan by advancing good nutrition, regular physical activity, breastfeeding, and healthy weight. DNPAO works in the settings where people live, learn, work, and play to improve population health and reduce the burden of obesity and related chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. DNPAO focuses on improving nutrition, supporting breastfeeding, increasing physical activity, and reducing obesity through evidence-based public health strategies. The Division develops, adapts, and promotes approaches grounded in the best available scientific evidence and supports their implementation through state, local, tribal, and community partners. DNPAO places particular emphasis on strengthening policies, systems, and environments that support healthy behaviors and improve program reach, effectiveness, and sustainability.
To achieve these goals, DNPAO works with states and local jurisdictions, Tribes, universities, and community-based organizations to design, implement, and evaluate effective practices and programs. The Division supports states and communities with high obesity prevalence and elevated chronic disease risk and promotes the dissemination and scaling of successful interventions that improve nutrition and physical activity outcomes. DNPAO’s core public health approach is organized around five priority strategies: 1. Making physical activity safe and accessible for all. 2. Making healthy food choices easier everywhere.
3. Making breastfeeding easier to start and continue.
4. Strengthening obesity prevention standards in early care and education settings. 5. Increasing the availability of and access to family healthy weight programs. DNPAO also undertakes crosscutting public health actions related to research, surveillance, translation, communication, evaluation, and technical assistance to support partners in adopting, implementing, and sustaining CDC-recommended strategies.
