GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
Kalamazoo Fence
1.1 SCOPE OF CONTRACT
A. The intent of this project is to construct approximately 0.5 miles of barbwire fence lines near Kalamazoo Campground on the Ely Ranger District.
B. Kalamazoo: The intent of this project is to construct two barbwire drift fences totaling approximately 0.5 miles in length to exclude active grazing within Kalamazoo Campground. Livestock in the campground presents a safety hazard and has resulted in numerous complaints from the public. In addition, limiting livestock activities within the campground will also extend protection of newly installed recreational infrastructure. This project includes construction of approximately 2,500 feet of new barbwire fence including installation of an estimated four 12-foot wire gates as a lump sum. All brace and anchor posts are to be schedule-40, galvanized steel except for wood posts located at the wire gates. Fences will end at natural rock barriers; a rock crib brace may be required at the northeast end. Fence wings will tie into existing cattleguards along FS Road 427.
C. Kalamazoo: Clearing of vegetation is allowed as needed to ensure a straight fence, however heavy equipment will not be allowed to clear the fence lines. Chainsaws are allowed for vegetation clearing. Fence runs should not deviate more than 12-inches from a straight line between braces. Clear corridor to 8 ft total width (approx. 4 ft on each side of fence centerline) and 8 ft above ground. Slash generated from clearing shall be scattered outside the corridor; do not leave in ditches or roadways. D. Off Road Vehicles may be authorized to transport posts and supplies outside the fence right of way; confirm with COR and Inspector for site specific protection needs. E. Work shall be performed in accordance with specifications and drawings in the plan sheets, followed by the ‘Standard Specifications for Construction of Roads and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects (FP-24).’
1.2 PROJECT LOCATION
A. Kalamazoo: From Ely, NV travel south along US-50 for 28 miles. Turn north on State Route 893 for 40 miles until you reach National Forest Road 427 (Kalamazoo Road). Turn right and travel approximately 2 miles east to arrive at Kalamazoo Campground. Total drivetime is about 80 minutes from Ely, NV. The Kalamazoo Campground is a small rural campground in White Pine County located within Spring Valley and adjacent to the High Schells Wilderness Area.
