Argonne National Laboratory
Statement of Work
Custom R&D Box Furnace
October 12, 2026

1.0 Background

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) requires a custom industrial furnace to support research and development (R&D) testing of fuel-flexible burner technologies. The furnace is intended to enable controlled thermal testing of direct- and indirect-fired burner configurations using natural gas and hydrogen fuel blends (0–100% H₂, balance natural gas).

This procurement is supported by an attached technical specifications document (the “Technical Specifications”), which includes the detailed technical requirements, interface expectations, and code/safety compliance references.

2.0 Scope

The Supplier shall design, fabricate, deliver, support installation, and commission a custom industrial furnace that meets the performance, functional, and compliance requirements stated in the Technical Specifications. The scope of the supply is defined by the Technical Specifications and include the furnace, adaptable burner bung, furnace access door, refractory/insulation, cooling tubes, optical ports and windows, instrumentation ports, exhaust flue, and associated interfaces with the existing laboratory facility.

3.0 Objectives

The objectives of this procurement are to:
Provide a furnace system suitable for R&D burner testing within ANL’s facility environment, including support for direct-fired and indirect-fired configurations. Deliver a furnace that achieves the thermal performance and operational capabilities stated in the Technical Specifications. Ensure the furnace is designed, fabricated, installed, and commissioned in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements identified in the Technical Specifications. Establish a complete and usable set of deliverables (drawings, manuals, certificates, and test/commissioning records) to support safe operation and future maintenance.

4.0 Tasks

4.1 Furnace Design

The Supplier shall develop the design package for the custom furnace system, including engineering details sufficient for fabrication, procurement, and installation. The design shall incorporate, at a minimum, all required performance features and interface provisions described in the Technical Specifications.

Design activities shall include:
Performing engineering analysis and developing design solutions to meet the Technical Specifications and applicable codes. Coordinating with ANL technical personnel through biweekly design meetings. Meetings shall be held remotely. The purpose of these meetings is to review design progress, address technical/interface questions, and ensure alignment. At each biweekly meeting, the Supplier shall provide a brief status update and raise items requiring ANL feedback or decisions.
