STATEMENT OF WORK
1. Objective/Requirements
NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) requires advanced computational design software to develop heat exchangers and space nuclear reactor system components. NASA's space nuclear power and propulsion work as well as advanced aeronautical technology development programs demand rapid design iteration and complex, high-performance geometries. This includes fission surface power systems for lunar and planetary missions, nuclear thermal propulsion, and NASA's plan to advance fission power systems across propulsion, surface, and long-duration missions, including the planned Space Reactor-1 Freedom. Conventional CAD tools cannot efficiently produce or iterate on these geometries.
These applications require:
• Compact, high-effectiveness heat exchangers, recuperators, and radiators • Lightweight, thermally and structurally optimized components for launch mass constraints
• Designs compatible with advanced and additive manufacturing (AM) processes To build these capabilities in-house and use engineering resources efficiently across multiple projects, GRC requires an implicit-modeling-based computational design platform.
