Capability Statement: What to Put on It, with a Free Template
Updated
A capability statement is a one-page summary of your business for government buyers: what you do, why you, what you have delivered before, and the codes they need to find and pay you. You send it with replies to sources sought notices, after industry days, and to small business offices.

What goes on it
- Core competencies: what you do, in the words the buyer uses in its notices.
- Differentiators: what makes you the safer choice (certifications, equipment, speed, location).
- Past performance: a few real jobs, with customer, scope and year. Commercial work counts.
- Company data: UEI, CAGE code, NAICS codes, set-aside status, and a named contact.

Tips
- Tailor it: lead with the work the agency you are writing to actually buys.
- Use the NAICS codes and terms from that agency's notices.
- One page, plain layout, real contact details.
- Answer sources sought notices with it: that is when it matters most.
Questions
What is a capability statement?
A one-page summary of a business for government buyers: core competencies, differentiators, past performance and company data such as UEI, CAGE code and NAICS codes.
How long should a capability statement be?
One page.
What if I have no federal past performance?
List commercial, state or local jobs. Buyers want evidence you have done similar work, not only federal work.
