DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The S-69 Weir consists of driven sheet pile walls with a concrete cap that acts as a weir and is a key feature of the Kissimmee River Restoration (KRR) Project. Located in Okeechobee and Highlands Counties, Florida, the weir’s primary function is to restore the Kissimmee River’s floodplain hydrology to pre-canal conditions by controlling water stages and discharges into the C-38 canal.

Repair of components of the existing S-69 weir structure require sheet pile concrete cap and driving concrete slab. Anticipated work includes but is not limited to: concrete removal portions of the cap, addition of new reinforcement steel closed stirrups, welding of anchor studs, providing expansion joint material, casting-in-place new structural concrete, assessment of voids underneath the driving slab through concrete coring and grouting of cored holes, and filling of gaps between the slab and cap with Controlled Low Strength Material (CSLM) or equivalent approved flowable fill.

The overall project site components encompass work to done at the following approximate location: 27.334767, -81.032830; very close to the “Chandler Slough South Trailhead”. Specific project components include the following items and incidental related work; refer to conceptual plans for further information: Concrete Cap Repair

  1. Concrete Cap Partial Demolition at Expansion Joints a. At 29 expansion joint locations, demolish 36” of concrete cap on each side of expansion joint. Existing rebar and sheet pile studs to remain.
  2. Inspection and Cleaning of Existing Concrete, Steel Bars, Anchor Studs, and Steel Sheet Piles prior to new repair. a. Use blast cleaning techniques for steel. Demolish concrete beyond the 36” footprint if concrete material is weak and unsuitable.
  3. Drilling/Burning of holes into sheet pile to allow for closed stirrups to pass through. a. Drill or burn 2-inch diameter holes to allow installation of closed-hoop steel stirrups.
  4. Welding of new anchor studs to sheet pile. a. Anchor stud size is 1/2"(diameter) x 4”
  5. Preparation of Studs and Rebar (Coating) prior to new repair a. Apply inorganic zinc-based primer for all existing rebar as well as both existing and new studs (coating to be applied after welding).
  6. Installation of new #5 closed-loop epoxy-coated stirrups at 6” on-center, with the bottom leg routed through the sheet pile. a. First stirrup must be 3” from expansion joint, all others to follow the spacing requirement.
  7. Provision of new expansion joints. a. Expansion joint thickness must be increased to 2”. Use Class 50 system, with ASTM C920 elastomeric sealant rated for at least 50% movement an documented as suitable for the anticipated weather and ultraviolet exposures, temperature range, and substrate conditions.
  8. Repair of concrete cap using structural cast-in-place concrete (f’c = 4,500 psi). a.

Concrete quality, placement, consolidation, and curing procedures per plans and specifications will be strictly monitored by both Contractor QC and Government QA personnel. Ancillary North Driving Slab Repair 1. Coring layout and investigation of potential subsurface voids a. Core drill 20 cores into the slab from approximately STA 23+80 to 25+20 (centered about the primary area of concern near STA 24+50).

Cores will be spaced at approximately 20-foot intervals and positions 2 to 5 feet from the inner wall to characterize conditions directly adjacent to the gap. Core drill new cores spaced at approximately 40-foot intervals along the remainder of the Northern leg. b. Investigate cored areas for voids underneath the slabs. Coordinate with the Government for any adverse conditions found. c. Fill all core holes with non-shrink grout after Government inspection.

2. Repair of separated slab at North leg of weir. a. The 3-inch separation as indicated in concept drawings and all other voids must be filled with Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) or an approved flowable fill. 3.
