Overview
The scope of this narrative was to document and evaluate the existing conditions air systems of the AML Building 215 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland. A 2018 report by AECOM, attached in Appendix Three, documented some of the air system airflows and deficiencies. After the existing conditions have been evaluated, recommendations are to be provided to correct existing deficiencies, replace system components and rebalance the cleanroom airflows to meet the current installed equipment’s requirements. The area of discussion encompasses a majority of the existing Building AML 215 building. BKM was retained to perform a documentation of the existing conditions, analyze of the building airflow system and provide recommendations to correct the previously identified and evaluated deficiencies. This report includes recommendations as well as documentation for the following components of the air systems for Building 215:
Removal and Replacement of the HEPA filters.
Repair or Replacement of all variable air volume (VAV) terminal units. Replacement of all airflow measuring stations (AFM)
Replacement of all magnehelic gauges
Repair ductwork where required.
Correct pathways for return air.
Testing of air handling units (AHU) and exhaust fans.
Calibration and verification of AFMs.
Rebalance of the existing cleanroom
Correction of airflows for lobby and exhaust systems.
This narrative describes the existing conditions of these items and provides general recommendations that will then be utilized as part of construction documents to allow for corrections to be implemented. Also, included in this narrative are a list of additional recommendations to allow for additional monitoring, preventative maintenance and energy savings opportunities.
The existing systems will continue to be analyzed to determine the existing airflows and changes from the original
