EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. Army have defined the goal of designing and deploying systems that are compatible in the production, use, and electronic exchange of information. These systems will provide seamless integration of Visual Information System (VIS) components, interoperate within the VIS environment and with external systems, and maximize the potential of new and improved technologies to provide support to the end users. In support of their common goal, the DoD and U.S. Army have developed guidelines and standards for system development and acquisition. The U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command (USAISEC), in turn, developed this VIS Software Design Criteria as a way to assist system
