Memo – Stone Gabion and Site Stonework Visual Reference This memorandum is provided as a visual reference only to illustrate the general appearance and character anticipated for stone construction associated with the Rehabilitate Climbing Facilities at Camp Muir project. The reference images are organized into three general applications: foundation gabions, building-envelope gabion cladding, and site stonework.
For the foundation and building-envelope gabions, the images are intended to communicate the general character of the stone placement within the gabion baskets. The design intent is for the gabions to read as stone-filled wire baskets, using appropriately sized stone placed and arranged to provide a stable, reasonably dense, and visually consistent finished assembly. The design does not anticipate keyed-in masonry, coursed stonework, tightly fitted dry-stack construction, or individually shaped and placed stones intended to create the appearance of traditional masonry. Natural variation in stone size, shape, color, orientation, and resulting density is expected based on the available source material. The site stonework is similarly intended to have an informal character that is compatible with the existing stone features at Camp Muir. Existing site conditions include examples of both carefully constructed drystack masonry and more loosely placed stone walls and site features. The latter is the intended visual reference for the new site stonework. Unless specifically indicated otherwise in the Contract Documents, the new work is not intended to replicate the tightly fitted, coursed, or keyed character of the existing dry-stack masonry. Stone should instead be arranged to create stable and functional site feature to mitigate erosion and wind scour of the embedded gabion basket foundations while retaining the irregular, natural character of locally available stone. Where specified, rebar staking is intended to aid installation and retaining of stacked stonework. Variation in joint width, stone size, orientation, and alignment is anticipated and is part of the intended appearance.
The gabion baskets, mesh configuration, connections, anchorage, dimensions, stone requirements, site wall configurations, and other technical aspects shown in the reference photographs should not be
