Quarry survey reports and recommendations 2026
Purpose: Fill materials imported into Mount Rainier NP for facilities projects can bring in new species or populations of invasive weeds. Eliminating or reducing the import of invasive species is an important part of NPS and park management policies and an ongoing operational effort in the park. Using weed-free fill or fill from quarries with frequent use and active weed mitigations will help meet that goal. Park revegetation specialists survey area quarries every 2-3 years to determine 1) the weed mitigations in place at the quarry; 2) the frequency of activity and fill extraction at each site, with more frequently used quarries and freshly extracted and processed fill preferred to reduce weed import; and 3) weed species present at any site that would be of particular concern (new or rare in park). Invasive weed surveys and treatments will still be required at any site where fill is imported for 2-3 years following any installation. 2026 Quarry inspection summaries are below. Individual site reports and summaries will be updated here: Z:\PWR\MORA\NCR\NCR_Vegetation\NCRShare\Reveg Crew\Invasive Managment\Quarry Surveys All recommended fill import mitigations should still be in place: •

o Limit time in stockpile and only use sub-surface rock that is hauled to the project within 2-weeks of being process from hill side. Clean truck beds importing fill prior to fill pick up and clean truck exteriors prior to entry into park Tarp all fill before leaving pit and traveling access roads (to keep out wind-borne weed seed along access road). Notify vegetation staff of locations of fill installation for follow up weed management activities
