SECTION 05 03 85

HISTORIC TREATMENT OF DECORATIVE FORMED METAL

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. This section specifies historic treatment of decorative formed metal as follows:
1. Chemically removing paint from wrought iron, cast iron and steel handrails and guardrails.
2. Repairs and refinishing of handrail and guardrail metal at the Rostrum shall occur in place.
3. Removing and dismantling handrails at the Administration Building for refinishing while stucco repair is in progress.

Refinishing to

occur on site and reinstallation of handrails in the same location as existing.
B. The Contractor shall provide all labor, material, equipment, and operations required to complete the rehabilitation work indicated herein.

1.2 RELATED WORK

A. 09 91 00, PAINTING: Primer and Painting requirements. B. Contract Drawings, Material Schedules: Paint specified for handrail and guardrail refinishing; type of finish, color, gloss level of finish coat.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit in accordance with Section 01 33 23, SHOP DRAWINGS, PRODUCT DATA, AND SAMPLES.

B. Manufacturer’s Literature:

1. Provide for all proprietary products.
3. Include installation instructions along with product data. Product data shall include recommendations for product application and use. Add notation to each product data identifying where the product will be used on the project.

C. Shop Drawings:

1. Include plans, elevations and sections showing locations and extent of repair and replacement work, indicating any replacement parts necessary, method of re-attachment (when a metal component was removed for repair work), accessory items and finishes.

a. Dimensions for any new, decorative formed metal components and their jointing, show relation of existing to new components. b. Templates and directions for installing anchor bolts and other anchorages.
c. Identification of each new metal item and component and its location on the structure in annotated plans and elevations. d. Provisions for soldered, welded, and sealant joints where required.

D. Samples for Verification:

1. New fittings and brackets

2. Each type of fastener, anchor, accessory and miscellaneous support in required finishes.
